Broughton Bay
Broughton Bay is situated at the northwest tip of the peninsula. It is a broad bay backed by sand dunes, with access to Whitford Sands (Gower's most northerly beach), at low water. Access to the beach and cliff paths is via the Broughton Farm caravan park. Only owners and guests are permitted to drive into the caravan area, but there is a large car park for the general public to use. If you head into the caravan park and keep to the left you will eventually reach the clifftop path that climbs up onto the headland area in the direction of Burry Holms, a small tidal island at the very tip of Gower that faces out towards Caldey Island and Tenby. A feature of this walk is Blue Pool Bay where there is a natural rock pool.
The water around this area is notorious for the tidal currents that can push swimmers out into the estuary. Swimming is not recommended at any state of tide. The bay generally remains fairly quiet in summer. It is possible to walk out to Whitford Lighthouse, but this would take a few hours.
WARNING: There is no Lifeguard patrol on this beach, do not swim as there are strong undertows from the estuary.
Broughton SUP Adventure
Glorious paddle today at Broughton. Crystal clear waters, plenty of Whitebait , Mullet and Bass to be seen, as well as lots of large Jellyfish.
We launched at low tide and then travelled along the coast to Burry Holms, the causeway was dry so we beached and then re-launched in Rhossili Bay. Conditions were great, even some some small waves to ride. We paddled back around the island, using the current to take us around Spanish Point. A gentle breeze was with us on the return and we stopped off at Blue Pool to take a few photos. It was a fabulous session.
I would like to add a disclaimer. Conditions around Burry Holms can sometimes be very challenging / dangerous currents etc. Carefully check the conditions and wear safety gear.
