Gower Walking Festival
6th June - 2st June 2009

This is the 5th Gower Walking Festival organised by Mumbles TIC and includes 45 walks with distances from 1 to 30 miles in length. Each walk has its own theme or activity, from history to literature with special walks which will appeal to all the family. Most of the walks are circular but some are one-way. These will give walkers the opportunity to walk large parts of the coastal path in stages. Where possible walks have been arranged to coincide with local transport.

For information about bus timetables can go to www.baytrans.org.uk

Each walk will be lead by an experienced guideand will be able to share information about topics such as, geology, archeology, flora and fauna, marine environment and land management. All walks must be booked in advance through the organisers, Mumbles Tourist Information Centre. A nominal fee of £3.00 per person per walk is charged and all proceeds go to the Mumbles TIC which is a volunteer based, non profit organisation.

About the walk
The walk starts and finishes in the village of Rhossili. You can park in the car park at the end of the village; current price is £2.00 all day. There are toilets, shops and a hotel adjacent to the car park.

The walk is quite strenuous at the start to reach the top of Rhossili Down, then is fairly easy going along the top, with a steep decent down to Llangennith, the beach is flat but save some energy for the path back up to the car park. You will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views (on a clear day) and a sense of achievement at the end of the walk.

Starting the walk
Walk out of the car park the way you came in, keeping to the left side of the road walk past the bus stop and down the path past the church. You will reach a rough lane, turn left downhill follow it until you reach a gate that leads onto Rhossili Down, now comes the strenuous bit.

Ahead you will see a path leading up hill, keep to the left path. Continue on up to the top, you can stop off halfway to take in the views, and catch your breath. On reaching the top follow the path at your leisure and take in the 360 degree spectacular views, Devon coastline to the south, Tenby and Pembrokeshire to the north-west and Gower to Swansea, east.

Continue on until you reach the descent down to the car park at Llangennith, take care on the way down, it can be slippery, aren't you glad you didn't walk up here? Go over the style past the entrance to Hillend car park and caravan site, walk straight down the hill, past the café/bar towards the sea, and follow the path over the dunes down to the beach. On reaching the beach, turn left, in the distance you will see Rhossili, your destination. Time to enjoy the beach, look out for the wreck of the Helvetia washed ashore in 1887. On reaching the other end of the beach follow the path back up to the village, time for refreshment and a seat to rest your legs. We hope you have enjoyed the walk.
